How to Keep Bears Away From Your House

The most effective thing you can do is secure all potential food sources, especially trash, in bear-proof containers with heavy-duty locks. Bears are guided by their powerful sense of smell, and eliminating scents that attract them is the first step to keeping them away from your property.

What is a bear?

Bears are strong, intelligent mammals with an extraordinary sense of smell—up to seven times stronger than that of a bloodhound. They are opportunistic feeders, meaning they will eat almost anything, from berries to garbage. While bears typically avoid humans, they are drawn to residential areas when they smell food or waste. Because of their strength and curiosity, once a bear becomes comfortable near homes, it can be difficult to deter them.

Methods to keep bears away

Start by investing in bear-proof garbage bins. Keep all trash locked away until collection day, and clean the containers regularly to remove lingering odors.

Install motion-activated lights or sprinklers that surprise bears when they approach. Sudden bursts of light or water discourage them from returning.

For properties with gardens, fruit trees, or beehives, consider electric fencing. A mild shock is enough to train bears to stay away, without causing serious harm.

What do bears dislike the most?

Bears dislike strong, unnatural odors such as ammonia, vinegar, or bleach. Soaking rags in these substances and placing them near trash bins, compost piles, or outdoor cooking areas can help deter them. Loud, unexpected sounds—like air horns, banging metal pots, or clapping boards—can also make bears leave quickly.

Are certain smells effective to deter bears?

Yes. Ammonia, pine cleaners, and vinegar are all scents that bears find unpleasant. Spraying these around your garbage area or compost bins can help mask the smell of food. Additionally, burning citronella candles during outdoor meals can help reduce the chance of drawing in curious bears.

How to get rid of bears without hurting them

The key is to remove all attractants. Do not leave pet food, birdseed, or leftover food outside overnight. Clean grills thoroughly after use, and avoid storing food in vehicles. If a bear is spotted nearby, make loud noises from a safe distance—this reinforces their natural instinct to avoid humans.

Other techniques to keep bears away from your yard

Install wind chimes or reflective metallic strips that move with the wind. Bears are wary of sudden movements and flashing reflections. Pick ripe fruits as soon as possible, and consider pruning fruit trees to make them less accessible. Keeping a tidy yard with no food scraps or strong odors is your best long-term strategy.
